Three Key Characteristics of Six Sigma
Leadership Commitment
Achieving Six Sigma is not easy – it requires serious commitment in the form of time, effort, and resources. For a company to be successful, such commitment must come first from the top executive leadership of the organization and must be practiced by everyone.
Managing Decisions with Data
It is not enough to run a business based on one’s experience or “tribal knowledge.” Decisions must be based on data versus the typical “I think”, I feel”, or “In my opinion” practices that often exist today. With the maturation of the information economy, data is available to virtually everyone in the organization, along with the tools for analyzing that data. Properly using data to Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control performance forms the foundation of the Six Sigma methodology.
Training and Cultural Change
Improved performance does not and will not happen automatically. High-caliber training is required. Disciplined implementation must follow, and people at all levels have to change the way they go about doing their jobs. In short, new ways of thinking, communicating, and operating must pervade the entire organization. You also need a methodology. DMAIC/DFSS provide a structured problem solving roadmap and tools towards obtaining the results you expect.

Hi, I’m Stephen Griffin, CEO of 6SigmaTek.
I have over 24 years as a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt in fact,I live and breathe process improvement. If I am not increasing satisfaction, increasing safety, creating optimal outcomes, breaking down silos, increasing communication and generating revenues I am having a bad day.
I have worked for the biggest corporations in, (automotive, aerospace, electronics, banking, specimen processing, and civil services). I have saved all of these industries hundreds millions of dollars, increasing their market share, and improving their public images.
But now I passionately specialize in healthcare improvement, and I’d like to share why and how this came to be.
My brother and I were very close growing up. My brother became ill where he had to undergo dialysis 3 times a week for many years via what is known as a Central Line Dialysis Catheter. During this time, I saw a young vibrant man lose weight, become weak, become frail, and always exhausted. He became half the brother that I knew. It was very difficult for me to understand what was going on. Then one day I received a phone call that my only brother had slipped into a coma because he had acquired what is known as Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI). My brother sadly for me passed away.
I was working in manufacturing at the time and had never heard of CLABSI or what caused it. Once I found out the cause, which was process failure from cleaning to insertion of the catheter, I quit my job!
I was so upset because this was 100% preventable. From this 6SigmaTek was started. My passion towards patient safety is what drives me every day. I have dedicated my life to attack healthcare processes and create patient safety and drive efficiency.
The result of starting 6SigmaTek has been that my team and I have partnered with dozens of hospitals, and I can confidently say that not only have we improved patient care, physician engagement, and employee satisfaction, reduced wait times, errors and lost revenue, we have saved lives.
That is the whole purpose of healthcare.
